7 CIBC Dividend Platinum Card Dividend Dollars Program Terms (These terms govern the CIBC Dividend Platinum Program) 1. Who Is Eligible To Participate In The Program? All CIBC Dividend Platinum cardholders ( Cardholders ) are eligible. 2. How To Earn Dividend Dollars Program Details: The Dividend Dollars Program is an annual program. This means that Dividend Dollars are accumulated each month, beginning with the January credit card Statement, and awarded at the end of the year as a credit on the December statement. One Dividend Dollars account (a Dividend Account ) will be set up for each CIBC Dividend Platinum credit card account (a Credit Card Account ). Dividend Dollars earned by the Primary Cardholder and authorized users of the same Credit Card Account will be credited to the same Dividend Dollar Account. Dividend Dollars are earned on CIBC Dividend Platinum Card ( Card ) purchases, less returns ( Net Purchases ). Cash advances, CIBC Convenience Cheques, balance transfers, interest, Credit Card Account payments, and fees do not earn Dividend Dollars. Each monthly statement will show Dividend Dollars activity during the period covered by that statement. Total Dividend Dollars earned over the year to date will also appear on each monthly statement. Dividend Dollars are calculated on a tiered basis (Refer to point 3 for details). The rate used for calculating Dividend Dollars is based on Net Purchases over the course of the year to date. Dividend Dollars are not earned on Net Purchases which exceed $50,000 each year (based on January through December statements). After Dividend Dollars are awarded on the December statement, the Dividend Account will be reset to $0.00 and the program will begin again with the January billing cycle (which starts immediately after the December statement is issued). 3. Rebate Rates: Dividend Dollars are earned on a tiered basis. The rate used to calculate Dividend Dollars depends on your year to date Net Purchases. For example: If your year to date Net Purchases total $1,000, and you make a purchase of $100, you will earn Dividend Dollars on that $100 purchase at a rate of 0.5%. Each tier range must be completed before Net Purchases earn Dividend Dollars at the next higher tier. TIER 1: 0.5% rebate on your first $3,000 in annual Net Purchases TIER 2: 1.0% rebate on your next $12,000 in annual Net Purchases (i.e. between $3,000 and $15,000) TIER 3: 1.5% rebate on your next $20,000 in annual Net Purchases (i.e. between $15,000 and $35,000) TIER 4: 2.0% rebate on your next $15,000 in annual Net Purchases (i.e. between $35,000 and $50,000) Sample Scenario: Year To Date Net Purchases: $0.00 First Purchase on Visa Account: $ $500 X 0.5% (TIER 1) = $2.50 Dividend Dollars Earned Year To Date Net Purchases: $ Subsequent Purchases on Visa Account: $35, $2,500 X 0.50% (TIER 1) = $12.50 Dividend Dollars Earned $12,000 X 1.0% (TIER 2) = $ Dividend Dollars Earned $20,000 X 1.5% (TIER 3) = $ Dividend Dollars Earned $1,000 X 2.0% (TIER 4) = $20.00 Dividend Dollars Earned Total Dividend Dollars Earned On Subsequent Purchase $ Year To Date Net Purchases: $36, All subsequent Net Purchases in the year (that do not exceed $50,000) earn Dividend Dollars at a rate of 2%. 5
8 4. Further Details On Calculating Dividend Dollars: Dividend Dollars cannot be earned, and will not be credited, on Credit Card Accounts not in good standing when Card purchases are made or when a monthly statement is issued. Dividend Dollars will not be credited to a Credit Card Account not in good standing or not open when the December statement is issued. If a Credit Card Account is closed mid-year for any reason, all Dividend Dollars in the Dividend Account at that time will be cancelled. Dividend Dollars will be based on the Canadian dollar amount of Net Purchases, and will be calculated and credited in Canadian dollars. A fraction of a cent will be rounded up to the nearest cent. CIBC may choose not to credit Dividend Dollars on Net Purchases which are greater than the available credit, which means the remaining portion of the Credit Card Account credit limit, as originally established or later changed by CIBC. This means that if Credit Card Account payments are made which are greater than the outstanding balance on the Credit Card Account (whether or not this is done in order to increase the amount of credit available), no Dividend Dollars may be credited on Net Purchases in excess of available credit. 5. Discrepancies: Cardholders must advise CIBC Credit Card Services of any discrepancies in the Dividend Account no later than six months after the date of the purchase for which an adjustment is requested. Otherwise, the amount of Dividend Dollars (except for erroneous credits) will be deemed to be correct. 6. Miscellaneous: From time to time it may be necessary for CIBC to restrict, suspend or otherwise alter aspects of this program, with or without notice to Cardholders. Only Primary Cardholders may obtain information about the amount of Dividend Dollars earned or credited. Requests for early payment of Dividend Dollars will not be considered. Dividend Dollars cannot be transferred between Visa accounts or otherwise, with two exceptions: (i) If the Primary Cardholder chooses to cancel his/her Card and become a regular CIBC Dividend Card Cardholder, any Dividend Dollars accumulated up to the date the Card is cancelled will be transferred to the regular CIBC Dividend Card, and any purchases and returns made before but not posted until after the transfer will be calculated at the regular CIBC Dividend Card rebate rate (which is lower). After conversion to a Dividend Card, Net Purchases on the Dividend Card will earn Dividend Dollars beginning at the Tier 1 rate. (ii) If the Primary Cardholder chooses to cancel his/her Card and become a CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Cardholder, any Dividend Dollars accumulated up to the date the Card is cancelled will be transferred to the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite card, and any purchases and returns made before but not posted until after the transfer will be calculated at the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite rebate rate (which is the same as for the CIBC Dividend Platinum card). After conversion to a Dividend Visa Infinite card, Net Purchases on the Dividend Visa Infinite card will earn Dividend Dollars beginning at the tier corresponding to the year to date Net Purchases on the Card. If a Cardholder transfers from another CIBC Visa card product to the Card, the full annual fee for the Card must be paid. Dividend Dollars have no cash value and cannot be attached, pledged or hypothecated in any way. Dividend Dollars cannot be transferred under a domestic contract or other legal process. If the Primary Cardholder dies, the Dividend Dollars earned on the Credit Card Account will be payable to his/her estate, unless the surviving spouse is an authorized user and he/she applies to become and qualifies under CIBC s standard credit criteria as the Primary Cardholder within two months after CIBC is advised of the Primary Cardholder s death. Any abuse of the program s privileges, failure to follow its terms or misrepresentation may result in CIBC ending a Cardholder s participation. CIBC may end this program at any time, in whole or in part, with or without notice. If this program is ended, Dividend Dollars based on Net Purchases posted to statements from and including January in the year of termination until the final statement period before termination will be credited to the Credit Card Account, as long as the Credit Card Account is in good standing at that time (if it is not, all Dividend Dollars will be cancelled). Cardholders are solely responsible for any tax liability and tax reporting obligations arising from earning Dividend Dollars. 6
9 NOTES 1 Dividend Dollars are calculated as follows: on the first $3,000 in net annual card purchases on your CIBC Dividend Platinum Account your rebate is 0.5%; on your next $12,000 in net annual card purchases your rebate is 1.0%; on your next $20,000 in net annual card purchases your rebate is 1.5%; on your next $15,000 in net annual card purchases your rebate is 2%. See program terms for details. Rebate is earned on card purchases less returns, and not on cash advances, CIBC Convenience Cheques, balance transfers, fees, interest, payments or on net card purchases over $50,000 per year. Rebate is paid into the card account when the December account statement is issued, if the account is then in good standing otherwise, rebate is cancelled. 2 The number of Bonus Dividend Dollars you may earn is at the sole discretion of the participating CIBC Bonus Rewards partner and may only be earned when you use your card for payment. The CIBC Bonus Rewards Benefit cannot be combined with any other promotional offers. CIBC Bonus Rewards terms, conditions and participating merchants may change without notice. For full details and important information regarding the CIBC Bonus Rewards Benefit, please visit 3 Subject to merchant transaction limits. 4 Insurance coverage(s) included with CIBC credit cards are underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada (RSA). Some insurance coverage(s) require purchase(s), auto rentals, common carrier fares and other trip costs to be charged to the card to activate coverage. Other conditions may also apply. Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance (CLDI) is available for automobile rentals of up to 48 days. The full cost of the rental must be charged to the card and the rental agency s Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) must be declined. CLDI provides coverage up to the actual cash value (ACV) of the rental vehicle as defined in your insurance certificate. Note that some rental agencies may assess their damages at an amount greater than the ACV of the rental vehicle and you may be liable to them for the difference. Before declining the rental agency s CDW or LDW, you should read carefully and compare the terms of the rental agreement, the CLDI insurance certificate in your card package and any other insurance you own to decide which coverage best meets your protection needs. Cash advances bear interest from the date they are taken. 8 All Cardholders (primary and authorized users) on the account will receive a PIN. 9 The primary cardholder may assign and change the Authorized User Spending Limits on the credit card account for any authorized users by contacting CIBC. CIBC may make adjustments to the spending limits any time following a decrease in the credit limit or cash limit of the card. The spending limits for authorized users will be subject to the overall credit limit and cash limit on the credit card account, so the funds available to an authorized user may be less than the spending limit set. For full details visit 10 The cash spending limit is a limit for cash transactions which falls within the overall spending limit for an authorized user. Cash refers to cash advances, CIBC Convenience Cheques and balance transfers. 11 Personalized CIBC Convenience Cheques can be ordered by calling a CIBC Card Services Representative. “Obviously, there are some rules with how the insurance features work, but people don’t take advantage of it,” she says. “I think that’s because the average person doesn’t know this credit card feature exists, or maybe they’ve heard about it but think there’s a caveat.”
So what kinds of insurance do our credit cards provide?
Select cards automatically provide different kinds of insurance for purchases on your credit card, but it’s your job to make the claim.
Here’s a look at some of their insurance features:
• Rental vehicle insurance. Most credit cards that provide auto rental collision, loss or damage insurance are limited to cars with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of up to $65,000. The total rental period must not exceed 48 days.
There are also differences in the type of rental vehicles insured. BMO World Elite MasterCard, for example, restricts coverage to four-wheel passenger vehicles, yet CIBC Aventura World MasterCard and RBC Rewards Visa Gold’s auto rental insurance includes mini-vans used for transportation of passengers and their luggage.
• Emergency medical insurance. Provincial health plans are hardly generous when it comes to emergency medical claims incurred outside of Canada. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), for example, limits daily out-of-province medical claims to $400. But hospital and surgical expenses in U.S. tourist destinations, such as Florida, can cost more than $10,000 per day.
Travelers should check their cardholder insurance documentation carefully to find out eligible medical expenses. Aspire World MasterCard, BMO World Elite MasterCard, ScotiaGold Passport Visa and TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite all cover diagnostic tests (including x-rays), emergency ambulance transportation, hospital room and board, physician services, prescription drugs, private duty nursing and return airfare to your home province.
Unlike most other cards, BMO World Elite’s out-of-province hospital coverage benefit pays for more expensive coronary and intensive care unit accommodation, and isn’t limited to semi-private charges.
Cardholders should also note differences in eligibility according to age. Under the Aspire World card, cardholders and spouses of any age are covered, yet BMO World elite excludes anyone 65 or over. Aspire World MasterCard and BMO World Elite MasterCard have the highest per-person lifetime maximum of two million dollars.
• Purchase protection and extended warranty. Some credit cards feature purchase protection and extended warranty on personal property or gifts for 90 days from the date that items were charged on a card.
Many extended warranty insurance features automatically provide cardholders with double the term of the manufacturer’s warranty, up to a maximum of one additional year, commencing after its expiry.
Take note of differences in maximums: While CIBC Aventura World and BMO World Elite covers a lifetime liability of $60,000 per cardholder, RBC Rewards Visa Gold’s maximum amount of coverage is $50,000 per year.
Is credit card insurance too good to be true?
Travel credit cards with insurance benefits come with a cost. Annual fees range from $110 for ScotiaGold Passport Visa; $120 for CIBC Aventura World MasterCard, TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite, and Aspire Travel World MasterCard; and $150 for the BMO World Elite MasterCard. RBC Rewards Visa Gold, however, doesn't require a yearly fee.
The fees could be worth it, though. For example, charge the full cost of a hired car to a card with vehicle rental insurance, and you could save $20 to $30 per day by declining the rental agency’s collision damage waiver insurance.
According to ScotiaBank, the premium for its ScotiaGold Passport free emergency medical insurance for two adults who go on a 31-day trip is about $152. Travellers who book a two-week vacation on the card save about $76, based on what would have otherwise been spent on private health insurance costs.
Many travel credit cards also feature other perqs, including rewards miles, flight-delay and baggage insurance, and trip-cancellation-and-interruption insurance.
