Direct Line car insurance policy scores

We analyse and rate the 53 most important elements of standard car insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to drivers when choosing and using a car insurance policy, and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score. Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. Weightings are then applied to the higher and lower element scores to enhance/reduce their impact in the overall product score.

The premium is calculated using this information and any incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete information could invalidate all or part of the policy and result in claims being rejected or not fully paid. This policy will be governed by English Law unless you and we agree otherwise. Our cancellation and complaints procedures are detailed in the policy and our cancellation procedures are as follows:

  • If you cancel before your policy is due to start, we will return any premium paid in full.
  • If you cancel within 14 days of the policy starting , or within 14 days of receiving your documents (whichever occurs later), we will return any premium paid less a charge for the number of days for which cover has been given and an administration fee of £0.00 (including Insurance Premium Tax where applicable) or;
  • If you cancel after those 14 days have passed we will return any unused premium less the administration fee of £47.30 (including Insurance Premium Tax where applicable) or;
  • If you have made a claim or if one has been made against you during the current period of insurance, you will not receive a refund.

If your circumstances change between the date you purchase the policy and the date when you require the policy to commence, please call us. Failure to inform us of any changes could invalidate all or part of the policy and result in claims being rejected or not fully paid.

We will securely store your payment details so that we may automatically renew your policy for subsequent years. Each year we will write to you before we take any payment to remind you that this is happening.

Mid term adjustments to your policy may result in an administration fee of £ (including Insurance Premium Tax where applicable) as well as any additional premium incurred as a result of the amendment.

  • All drivers are at least 21 years of age and hold a valid UK or EU driving licence and are permanently resident in the UK.
  • The total number of accidents or claims for all drivers does not exceed 5 in the last 3 years.
  • The total number of convictions, fixed penalties or disqualifications for all drivers does not exceed 3 in the last 5 years.
  • Your No Claim Discount (NCD) must have been earned in the UK (including Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland) and issued by your previous UK insurer. All NCD must be written in English, the NCD level shown in years and not as a percentage. All NCD should be in your name as the policyholder and not be in use on any other vehicle.
  • The vehicle is kept at your address and has not been modified or altered in any way (including wheels, suspension, bodywork and engine), other than external signage, internal paneling and/or internal or external racking.
  • Any misrepresentation made by you in order to obtain a lower premium could result in cancellation of your policy and rejection of any claims.
  • If you selected one of the following occupations when obtaining your motor insurance quotation then the vehicle may only be used for Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes: Motor Trade, Retired, Housewife / Househusband, Drivers, Students and Unemployed.   • Your business or the business of your employer is not in any way connected with any of the following: the entertainment or fashion industry, professional sports, foreign service, foreign diplomatic personnel, mini-cab drivers or mini-cab controllers.
  • Your vehicle is not used for hire and reward including couriers.
  • Your vehicle is not used for the purpose of cooking food or providing hot or cold refreshments such as Ice Cream Vans, Burger Vans or does not carry hot bitumen or any other heated or refrigerated or frozen goods.
  • The annual mileage of your vehicle does not exceed 50,000


Protected No Claims Bonus

A way to safeguard your no claims discount is to pay an additional amount on top of your car insurance to protect it. This means that even if you were to make a claim, yours no claims bonus would stay intact.

Important information:

No claims discount protection does not protect the overall price of your insurance policy. The price of your insurance policy may increase following an accident even if you were not at fault.

No claims discount protection allows you to make one or more claims before your number of no claims bonus years falls. Please see the step-back procedure for details.

If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident where the other driver is identifiable and is also at fault, our Motor Legal Expense policy will give you a stress free service to recover 100% of your uninsured losses. For a small cost this service will give full management of your claim from start to finish, together with legal advice, available 24 hours a day.

  • £100,000 protection for legal costs following an accident caused by someone else
  • Personal Injury Claims - keep 100% of compensation for any injuries sustained. Without this cover your solicitor may take 25% in fees

Breakdown Cover

Breaking down during the course of a journey or the failure of your vehicle to start outside your home could result in the unexpected expense of paying for assistance. To avoid such cost and frustration, we recommend our Award Winning Breakdown Service offering varying levels of cover to suit your needs.

Roadside (Assistance and Recovery) + More information:

UK Roadside Assistance:

  • Help at the roadside where the breakdown occurs more than a ¼ of a mile from your home address or the normal place of garaging.
  • Recovery to a local place of repair or to a destination of your choice up to 10 miles from the breakdown
  • Message Relay service –for example a phone call to a family member, friend or colleague.
  • Caravans and trailers that are attached to your vehicle at the time of the vehicle breakdown are recovered with your vehicle, you and passengers.

UK Roadside Recovery:

All the benefits of UK Roadside Assistance plus:

  • Recovery to a destination of your choice anywhere in the UK if the breakdown occurs more than a ¼ of a mile from your home address or the normal place of garaging and the vehicle cannot be repaired by the end of the working day.
  • A relief driver if you fall ill or suffer an injury that prevents you from driving.

Homestart (Assistance) + More information:

All the benefits of Roadside Assistance and UK Recovery plus

  • Help at your home address or the normal place of garaging or within a ¼ of a mile of your home address or the normal place of garaging if your vehicle suffers a breakdown.
  • Recovery to a local place of repair if repair is not possible at your home address or the normal place of garaging.
  • Recovery to a destination of your choice anywhere in the UK if the breakdown occurs more than a ¼ of a mile from your home address or the normal place of garaging and the vehicle cannot be repaired by the end of the working day.
  • A choice of either a hire car (up to 1600cc) for 48 hours, alternative transport up to £100 or overnight accommodation up to £60 per person (to a maximum of £500) if your vehicle cannot be repaired by the end of the working day.
  • The cost of one single rail fare to enable the driver to collect the vehicle once repaired.
  • A relief driver if you fall ill or suffer an injury that prevents you from driving.
